EDITING FOR FILM WRITERS
two sides of the same coin

In one afternoon, Michael Economou will present an intense, structured overview of the Masters Course he teaches at the USC School of Cinema, geared toward film writers.

The similarities between writing and editing will be examined, while underlining how the knowledge of key editing principles can become an extremely useful tool to the screenplay writer, beginner or otherwise. This class is specifically designed for writers who have a basic knowledge of screenplay writing and have written at least one screenplay or are in the process of writing one. This is also essential for the Q&A period following the class, during which the attendees can discuss specific writing problems they face in reference to their own screenplays.

Michael Economou was born and raised in Athens, Greece. He graduated from the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) with a degree in film. He is a member of the Writers Guild, Producers Guild, Film Editors Guild, and the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, where he is a judge in the annual International Screenplay Competition, a member of the Foreign Films Nominating Committee, and on the Executive Committee for Foreign Student Films. Economou also teaches at the University of Southern California (USC) School of Cinema, Masters Division, and conducts writing seminars and workshops around the world. Among other awards, he won an Emmy and an Oscar nomination for the feature-length documentary OFF THE EDGE (1976), which he wrote, co-produced and edited. In his various capacities, he has worked with George Roy Hill, Alan Alda, Jeremy Kagan, Glenda Jackson, Sophia Loren, Tommy Lee Jones and more.
