AKOE/AMFI The Story of a Revolution

In 1977 a group of friends created A.K.O.E. – the Greek Homosexual Liberation Movement. The movement’s magazine – “Amfi” – and its offices at the legendary basement on Zalongou street, was a place of refuge for the Greek LGBT+ community until 1990. AKOE and Amfi are the first reference points for a community that is just beginning to gain consciousness and organization. It will be a revolution for the right to exist, the right to happiness, and the right to love.

Iossif Vardakis was a member of A.K.O.E. from 1985 to 1988. He was part of the editorial team of “Amfi” and was responsible for the Art Direction of two of its issues. He studied film and television at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts and English and American Literature at NYU’s Graduate School of Arts and Science. He has been working as a theater director in Greece and Cyprus since 1997. He has directed over 30 stage shows.
